Goodbye

I've decided to quit blogging. I'm tired of getting mean comments and I don't need that kind of "support".

The original goal of this blog was to connect with other people with bad PhD advisers, so I could make it through my PhD. I grew up, got a job, had a kid, got an autoimmune disease, and moved pre-tenure. I'm re-organizing my life and it's pretty awesome right now. Which is why I'd rather quit blogging so that I don't have to read all the shit that people send me. If I need support, I'll count on my friends. Not anonymous commentators with bad attitudes.

I am very sorry to see you leave. I quite enjoyed your posts. I wish you the best of luck.

I have ever commented on your blog, but have been reading it for about 8 months. I can't imagine what negative thing anyone could have to say to you. Who cares, they're idiots. Quit blogging if you have to. But I respect the decisions you've made for yourself, your career and your family. Good luck with everything.

I'm sorry to hear it. I will miss your blog, and I hope everything continues to go well for you at your new place.

I am sorry to see you go but completely understand your reasons. As a female PhD student it was really nice to hear the perspective of an early career female scientist. Thanks so much for all of your insight over the past few years. Take care and good luck with your life and research adventures!

Very sad to see this happened.
If you really decide to go, good luck with the rest of your life.

I'm sorry to hear that. I almost never comment, but really enjoy reading your blog. I also had a bad adviser and am now in a pretenure position. It's nice to read about someone in a similar situation. Hope everything goes well for you in the future!

Oh no! Really? Well, I for one will really miss you. You are one of my favorite bloggers and I have really enjoyed reading you for the last year. It's really helped me get through my own first couple years on TT. Best of luck with your life. Thank you for sharing with us.

Sorry to hear that! I know I didn't leave many comments, but I kept up with your adventures pretty regularly. Best of luck to you with family, new lab, everything!

Dear JP, that is a pity! You will be missed, because, note, there are friendly, non-anonymous readers of your blog out there. But it's your decision, and I just want to say thank you for your blog, - I learned a lot from it! I wish you all the best at NewU!

Wha...? Crap. I'm so sorry to hear this, I discovered your blog relatively recently (maybe in the last year) and have really enjoyed your perspective on things. I'm so sorry blogging has stopped being enjoyable to you because of a few assholes.

Sorry. I've enjoyed reading, and it's been useful - good luck as things continue to get better!

De-lurking to say:

Sucks to hear that you're packing it in; I enjoyed your stories and anecdotes, and I was particularly glad to read about your pulling through with a new position. Thanks for sharing it all.

Have a good one!

I hope the awesomeness continues.

Please reconsider. I look forward to your posts- I'm a new assistant professor in physics and you provide a nice perspective.

Sad that there's a lot of shitty comments that I assume you moderate?

I will miss your blog and your perspective on the academic life. I'm a second-year graduate student in the hard sciences, and I've read your blog for about a year. I'm sorry that the nasty commentators got to you, but I understand. Best of luck with your career, your family, your writing and all the rest.

You're leaving??!?! But your blog is my favorite!

Seriously, I still want to know how you are managing four impossible things at once: having a kid, having an autoimmune disease, being pre-tenure, and moving your lab. Do you have a super-efficiency gene?

Best of luck to you, I'm sure you will kick ass with everything you do in the future!

I read your blog regularly. Don't think I have commented before. I will be sorry to see you go. Good luck always!

Yet another regular reader coming out of the woodwork. I'm sorry I haven't commented more - I really enjoy your blog and think your blog has given me insight into the world of TT jobs. I hope maybe sometime the annoyance of mean people will fade and bring you back to blogging!

I'm sorry that you've had such jerks comment on your blog. I haven't commented as often as I probably should, but I've loved your blog. If you start up again elsewhere, please let me know! Good luck with the future!

Maybe you should just start a new one where you let us see all the mean comments! That might be entertaining, and we can side with you.

Sorry to see you go. I am a long-time reader, and I always enjoyed your blog. I wish you the best of luck in your new digs.

Whoa. I love your blog. BUT I can totally understand the reasoning. It kind of sucks that a lot of our world is dominated by d-bags, which is why I often dread reading my peer-reviewed feedback.

Good luck to you! Sorry to see you go.

I am so sorry to see leave!
I truly enjoy your blog and I support and understand everything you have done. You have made the right choices. You are doing very well, do not let other people tell you otherwise.

Wish you the best!

I'm sorry to see you go. I am a total lurker, but read your blog regularly. I'm an early career female scientist; I also have some similar health issues (I have MS). When I found out there was an early career woman science blogger with an autoimmune disease writing I was blown away. I've gotten a lot out of what you've had to say. Sorry the jerks chased you away.

I've been reading for a while, too and commented a few times (positive comments only). I will miss your blog. I was an assistant prof who left academia a few months ago, but I still very much enjoy reading about the adventures of other assistant profs. Best of luck to you...I hope you get that CAREER grant you've been trying so hard for. If anything, at least post when you get it :)!

I'm so sorry to hear that you're closing your blog. I really enjoy reading it. Would you please reconsider after reading all the lovely comments on this post?

Major bummer! I'll be sad to see you go too! Especially since it's due to trolls, and not because you feel over blogging itself. Phooey!

I wish you continued good luck at your new job. Maybe we'll see you around in the comments of other blogs so you can give us updates?

I will miss your blog deeply. I am a female junior faculty too and I totally relate to many stories you share. I admire your optimism, determination, strength, toughness, and straightforwardness.

All the best with your life.

very sorry to hear you are going. I'll miss reading about your progress. It has been great to hear about another women in science who is at a similar stage to me and is doing great and overcoming so many obstacles and not moaning about things. I hope everything goes well in the future.

I read your blog regularly but have never commented. I'm sorry to see you leave - I really have enjoyed reading about your experiences. I wish you success and happiness.

Sucks about negative comments, sorry to see you go.

I never commented but I have been reading for a while. Very sorry to hear that you quit blogging. Since I am also in a 2 body problem and will eventually leave my institution to solve it, I enjoyed reading about your experience. It gave me hope and confidence that it can work out.
Thanks for the blog

You will be missed, and Sparky too! So thank you for sharing your experiences with us for this long :) Good luck with everything, your new U is lucky to have you!

I've had the same internal debate over continuing and dealing with some icky people vs. just letting the blog go. So while I understand, I am disappointed people have been poking at you and will miss you in this space. Many best wishes for you and yours.

I have been reading your blog for quite a while now, and have found it a great resource. Thanks for the amazing insights about academia! You will be missed

If anything especially awesome (funding, more babies) happens, I'll update the blog. I don't know if I'll come back...but it could be a while if I do. I'm really happy that to you all have been so nice about it, and that some of you found this blog interesting (or helpful?). I'll miss it.

Anonymous said...

Reconsider your decision!!
After all in academia we know we can't shut down everytime we get a bad review. Bad reviews are not supportive in any way, but you don't let them beat you. You resubmit grants/papers till they are awarded/accepted. Blogging is the same way. You should take all of these sweet 40+ comments more seriously than those mean useless unsupportive comments (irrespective of their number)
So please reconsider. If you still decide to quit blogging, that is okay. I am sure I will be seeing you at our regular meetings... May be I will introduce myself this time :)

Stupid trolls. I will add my voice to list of the people who are sad to see you go, who read but don't comment.

You will be missed. I am so happy that things are looking up with you. I hope things continue to go well

JP, I'm also a long time reader, and I will miss your writing, your stories, and your incredibly inspiring time management abilities! The internet is full of idiots, even in academic online circles, and I'm sorry you got discouraged.

I'll keep subscribed through Google Reader, and I look forward to hearing more from you someday!

As another lurker who doesn't comment I'll be sorry to see you go. I also have a chronic disease and your blog has been an inspiration on how one can survive in academia when having to manage that as well. In fact, you once mentioned a book that I consequently got and which helped me immensely (Full Catastrophe Living), so although that was pure serendipity, I would like to thank you for that!

Anyway, good luck with everything!

so sorry to see you go, I've read your blog for about a year and it helped me get through finish my phd & getting my first "real" academic job. thank you for sharing everything & your insight into TT careers & 2 body problems. i am still checking back every day hoping you have changed your mind... good luck at New U, all the best for your family, too.

Well, if you do decide to shut down your blog even after a long break, at least know that you really helped and inspired a lot of people. Thank you for that.

And if you do decide to come back someday, please consider the earlier suggestions about posting negative comments. Even if it does sort of wreck the friendly atmosphere of a comment thread, other readers will come to your defense and that helps takes away the anger and disgust you may feel about these losers who send mean anonymous comments.

Anonymous said...

i hope you continue to update the high points, and just close comments. There are so many negative stories, that it's nice to hear of someone doing ok.
